International Day of children involved in the life and work on the street is an opportunity to look once again at a problem that is increasingly present in our country. More and more children in BiH is begging on the streets, restaurants, large shopping centers every day. Those children are not registered at birth, have no birth certificate, no health nor social protection and do not go to school, like they do not exist.

Today, on the International Day of children involved in the life and work on the street, we are warned that the number of such children is increasing every day and that they are living without protection. In many cases, they are beginning to live on the street during their first year of life and a bit older children are forced to work or spend their days in vagrancy. The alarming fact is that, these children are increasingly becoming victims of human trafficking.

It is crucial to raise awareness of the phenomena of begging and the need to take actions. Therefore, it is essential that all citizens are actively involved in order to work together and contribute to preventing abuse of children for begging. A step forward can be seen in the establishment of Day care centers for the reception of such children who offer services in the form of social inclusion of children living and working on the streets. In these centers, children can participate in many educational and creative workshops, where they can spend their time with the professional staff, having one meal a day, as well as personal hygiene.

International Day for the children involved in the life and work on the street was established in 2011 by the Consortium for Street Involved Children, the leading international network dedicated to realizing the rights of children involved in the life and work on the streets around the world and since then is celebrated on every April 12th.

It is also celebrated this year on the level of the Regional Network for Children involved in the life and / or work on the street, consisting of organizations and institutions from Bosnia and Herzegovina, Serbia, Macedonia and Albania. One of upcoming activities is the International Conference „Towards sustainable and quality systems for support to street involved and at risk children in South East Europe“ that is going to be held in Hollywood hotel, Dr Mustafe Pintola 23, Sarajevo, Bosna I Herzegovina, on Thursday April, 16, from 9:30 till 16:30 organized by the Regional Network for Children Living and Working on the Street and children at risk, in cooperation with Ministry of Security of Bosnia and Heregovina. The event is funded by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of the Kingdom of Norway and Save the Children. The goal is to initiate discussion on sustainable and quality models of support for the street involved and at risk children and to present examples of good practices in the SEE region. Furthermore, the Conference intends to initiate dialogue between the states in the region and within the countries in order to recognize lessons learnt, challenges and similarities, as well as considering different possibilities for the creation of sustainable and quality services. It will also discuss cooperation mechanisms for the establishment of adequate protection and support to street involved and at risk children at national and regional level.
